John and June Allcott Gallery: Julio Lugo Rivas, Something familiar in the landscape

Julio Lugo Rivas, Something familiar in the landscape, 2022

Reception: October 4, 5:30-7:30 pm, with a Gallery talk starting at 6:00 pm

As a visual artist, Julio Lugo Rivas has a particular taste for zooming in, zooming out, focusing and blurring subjects, objects, or scenes from everyday life. Starting from social, political, and economic criteria, he delves into the relationship of living beings with their environments to present diverse readings that invite contemplation and reflection. Lugo Rivas uses the scientific method as part of the creative process both in the conceptualization and development of his artistic research.

Julio Lugo Rivas began his formal studies in art at the Escuela de Artes Plasticas de Ponce, Puerto Rico.  Concurrently, Lugo Rivas pursued a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy from the University of Puerto Rico, Medical Sciences Campus (2002) and is a co-owner/proprietor of his own pharmacy in Juana Diaz, Puerto Rico. The microscope, the digital camera, and painting are part of his tools for the development of projects, each linked by the intimate relationship with living nature and its environment. He has presented his work across Puerto Rico, the Caribbean, and Latin-Ibero America, including the National Exhibition of Puerto Rico, the Museum of the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez Campus (MUSA), the gallery of the Universidad Sagrado Corazón in San Juan, Puerto Rico and at Area, Lugar de Proyectos in Caguas, Puerto Rico. In 2013, he was selected by the Ponce Art Museum and the FIArt Foundation from 19 finalists for the Saltando Muros (Jumping Walls) Photographic Project. This project was presented in several museums, traveling within Ibero-America through 2015.
